Keith Giffen’s Defenders
Keith Giffen redid The Defenders for Marvel Comics. It was highly entertaining. One of Giffen’s early claims to fame was a stint on The Defenders, so he certainly had a handle on the subject matter. Joining Giffen to do pens was Kevin McGuire. JLA fans from the 80s were thrilled.
The Defenders were a collection of Marvel’s most powerful heroes: Dr. Strange, Sub-Mariner, The Hulk and, sometimes among others, The Silver Surfer. But this group always seemed mismatched to me. Though I read the title only off and on through the years (and did not read the Giffen run), I always viewed The Defenders as a strange group of misfits who got together because no other Marvel team asked them to join. The members seemed thrown together in a story, never interacting with one another and establishing a camaraderie the way teammates should.
Giffen has always been known for his quirky style of writing. He created eccentric eighties classics like Ambush Bug and Lobo (that is, Lobo before he was turned into a thug). His work on the JLA and the Legion of Super-Heroes was just brilliant. And his run on The Defenders didn’t disappoint.
If you like what I wrote here, you might also enjoy some of the writing I did for this directory of the best USA psychics. That was a fun project to work on, let me tell you.
