Caro on Life and Poker Eight: Even the Score?
Sometimes, when someone does you wrong, you don’t get the chance to get even. Or sometimes it’s just not worth it to try to do so. Someone doesn’t pay you a hundred dollars at the end of a contract. Ok, so you lost out 100 dollars. You could try to ask for it back, but they say no. Your only other option is to go to court. So you decide to go that route. You have to file the case, probably need legal representation, and by the time it’s all said and done, you get your 100 dollars, but you’re out 1000 in lawyer’s fees and court costs. Was that worth it? Sure it may have given you satisfaction in getting even, but if you look at the pure cost/benefit analysis of it, it was a cheaper route to just let it go.
I’m not saying let people run you over, but it’s not always necessary to get even with someone, either in real life or on the poker table. So you get bluffed off a pot and lose 50 dollars, but the next hand, you win 200 with pocket aces from someone else. Are you still mad about the 50 you lost to Guy A, or are you happy for the 150 you earned from Guy B that offset your losses? I’d be happy with my bigger win. It’s online poker after all. No matter where the success came from, it was a success. If you play the opportunities right when you play poker online, it doesn’t matter where you’re winning from, as long as you’re winning in the long run. You may lose a few battles, but in the grand scheme of things, they don’t matter to the totality of the war.
